The top 11 Horn/Sax solos of the 80s

The recent passing of Men At Work’s Greg Ham, who was well-known for his woodwinds work on some of the band’s biggest hits, inspired me to look back into the classic alternative era for its eleven most memorable sax and horn solos:

11. Kirk Pengilly, Saxophone  — “The One Thing” (INXS)

While sounding much like the lyrics’ “cat-call from the bough,” this sax solo was a fitting bridge to INXS’ international hit “The One Thing.” Kirk Pengilly’s performance in the video was fun to watch as he plays the riff while moving around on the floor like someone should call 911 as the band members infiltrate some kind of dinner gathering. Still, the sporadic quick fingers and the wailing end note became the track’s third hook, behind the flowing chorus and guitar melody, all together making the song a catchy, yet timeless tune.

10. Phil Smith, Saxophone   –  “Love Plus One” (Haircut 100)

Nick Heyward, Les Nemes and Graham Jones made Brit-pop music history when they invited Phil Smith to join Haircut 100 permanently after he did some work with them in the group’s beginning stages. The result: a smooth sax accompaniment and solo for their biggest international hit, “Love Plus One.” Smith’s sax became a staple of Haircut 100’s signature
