Friday’s Guest: ABC’s Martin Fry

The man who rendered me only the second-best-dressed 80s guy in the world will be my guest on this week’s Revenge of the 80s Radio show — Martin Fry of ABC.
ABC will be touring the U.S. in August as part of the Regeneration Tour, which kicks off on August 1st. The lineup also includes Naked Eyes, Belinda Carlisle, Dead or Alive, A Flock of Seagulls and The Human League. Keep listening to Revenge of the 80s and check out this blog for more Regeneration Tour news. Tickets are available and can be purchased through the tour’s official website.
During the interview, Martin talks about:
- The band and its influences from early punk/new wave to Motown
- His ultra-cool suits
- His theory on the revival of new wave music
- How ABC excelled through its use of several musical styles in the 80s
- The new band lineup
- …and his short stint in a reality-TV duet singing contest.

Traffic is something of a microcosm of the entire musical history of ABC with heavy emphasis on the new wave/dance hybrids. Martin still sounds as suave as he did when he was shot with a “Poison Arrow” and wanted to know “How To Be a Millionaire.” Maybe someone will soon put out a song called “When Martin Sings.” I would be the first to put it on the air.
